PRINCE ALBERT

THINGS TO DO

Prince Albert is an oasis in the Central Karoo, where water from springs in the Swartberg mountains runs through the village in furrows, bringing gardens and orchards to life.

Tourism and farming are  the basis of our local economy and the town is well equipped for visitors. We have a supermarket, several butchers and a dairy for those who wish to do their own catering and our restaurants serve Karoo cuisine at reasonable prices. There is a wide range of things to do.

The village holds several festivals: the Olive Food and Wine Festival in April, the Oktoberfest in October and the Harvest Festival in November.

The district offers a variety of scenic drives and a circular trip across the Swartberg Pass to the Cango Caves, returning through Meiringspoort, is a must. If you have a robust vehicle with good clearance, day trips to Gamkaskloof - 'The Hell' and the Gamkapoort Dam are recommended. The Karoo National Park is only 1½ hours away.

Our cottages provide a comfortable base for exploring Prince Albert, the Swartberg Mountains, the Central Karoo and the Klein Karoo towns of Oudtshoorn with its ostrich show farms and Calitzdorp, known as the 'Port Wine capital' of South Africa.

A fact file in each cottage includes a list of local restaurants, shops and information about activities in the village.
